"NHS ASD / ADHD diagnosis deficit in Kinross"

About: Community Mental Health / South Perthshire Community Mental Health Team General practices in Tayside

(as a friend),

In 2021, I asked my GP for a referral for adult ASD diagnosis. I am still waiting for an appointment. I have been very fortunate to be able to access a clear cut ASD diagnosis privately. However, I am still keen for this to be verified via the NHS route. Having met new friends in a local self-supporting neurodiversity group, I have been made aware that adults seeking an ADHD diagnosis via the NHS are unlikely to get one as currently there is no local provision. (Of course, like me, there is the potential to get a private diagnosis but they cannot afford either that process or the cost of ongoing private medication prescriptions.) This is having a knock on effect on deteriorating mental health and wellbeing of a number of people I know personally. I hope this situation can be addressed and rectified as a critical healthcare priority. Thank you.

Dear Okurdcuss

Thank you for sharing details of your situation and the steps you had to take privately to resolve the issue. We are sorry to hear that you have experienced difficulty in getting NHS support to do this.

Feedback enables an organisation to reflect, identify areas for improvement and revise any processes as required. As each GP practice is an independent business, we would recommend that you feedback your experience directly to the practice to enable them to do this. Your practice will have a Complaints and Feedback Policy which will help explain this process, which the Practice Manager can provide for you.

Thank you for highlighting this healthcare priority.

Best wishes

Victoria Sullivan

Dear Okurdcuss

Thank you for your feedback. The South Perthshire Community Mental Health Team would like to apologies for your experience and for any distress that has been caused in the delay of your ASD assessment. We acknowledge that there are many people with similar experiences across Tayside waiting for assessment and treatment of both ADHD and ASD. In Tayside there has been a shortage of consultants psychiatrists, this is currently a national challenge and something we are trying to improve in Tayside. Another challenge in delivering timely, assessment and treatment of both ADHD and ASD has been the volume of referrals the service has received in recent years. The request for ASD and ADHD assessments have caused significant waiting times in all areas in NHS Tayside and there is ongoing planning on how to address this important issue.

If you would like to contact the community mental health team directly the number is 01764657120 and team lead Michael Devine will be happy to discuss your experience in more depth. Alternatively, you could highlight your experience through the NHS Tayside complaints procedure below
