"Very compassionate and caring nurses"

About: Daisy Hill Hospital / Daisy Paediatric Ward Daisy Hill Hospital / Emergency Department

(as a staff member posting for a patient/service user),

I took my little girl up to ED, where we had a four hour wait. We overheard someone say there was actually no doctor working, if we had of knew this we would of went straight to The Royal in Belfast. However, we were being looked after by an amazing nurse in ED! We were then taken up to the Daisy Ward. The ward is amazing, it's lovely for children and we love the privacy and having our own toilet.

The nurses are absolutely sensational, but during our stay we felt that there was serious lack of communication between doctors and the rest of the nursing staff. We were told our daughter needed IV fluids, so we were taken down to get this in and the practitioner could not get a vein and it was quite traumatic for my young daughter. The doctor then came in and asked why they were trying to put a drip up as she didn't need it. This was a lack of communication between them somewhere along the line. In the end, they later put a drip up, so my child had to go through this a second time, which was very difficult for us as parents also.

I find the nurses are a lot more humane and empathetic when we are in the treatment room, whereas it seems some of the doctors just see it as a situation that needs dealt with and really lack any emotion. When they come round to see us on the ward, they are lovely and answer all my questions and address my concerns, but maybe when it comes to doing procedures I feel they could be a little less robotic and more empathetic.

Other than that my experience on the Daisy ward itself has been very good.
