"Total right knee operation with robotic knee"

About: North Devon District Hospital / Trauma and orthopaedics

(as the patient),

Arrived at NDDH one day mid June. Got ready for surgery, the anaesthetist came around, I had already decided I wanted a general anaesthetic, but they were very keen to change my mind. But told them I had made my decision and wasn't changing it. I was 1st to go down but that got changed because I was having a general anaesthetic. They came & got me before lunch and the same anaesthetist was there and yet again still wanted me to change my mind but there was another anaesthetist and they said it's patient preference.

Had operation, got back onto ward about mid afternoon. Lots of people around checking my obs , when I was awake enough they gave me a coffee and sandwich. The day staff were a lot more helpful than the night staff, they gave me painkillers which weren't doing anything. I asked for my Tramadol, but couldn't have them until day staff came on.

Physio came & seen me. I did manage walking with the Taurus, but stayed in an extra night. By Friday morning I was up walking around with the Taurus. I could use my crutches and go up & down stairs. I was discharged by Friday lunchtime. The 1st 2 days at home were good but I think I overdone it so the last 2 days I have been resting more. I will be glad to get the plaster changed tomorrow.

Dear beidxb35

Thankyou for taking the time for giving us feedback.

I'm glad that your overall experience was good.

Sorry to hear about your pain relief, I will feedback your concerns to the team, and this can be used for future learning.

I'm glad that you are home and recovering well, sometimes you can overdo things, so little and often are more effective.

Good luck with your recovery, and take care.

Best wishes

Julie,

Dear beidxb35,

Thank you for the feedback we really appreciate any learning and improvements we can make. I would like to apologise on behalf of the anaesthetic team you felt pressured towards a spinal anaesthetic, it is the patients decision but the recovery time from a spinal anaesthetic with sedation is generally a quicker recovery with less side effects I.e. nausea, vomiting and pain and allows the physiotherapy and nursing teams to start mobilising within 4hours of surgery.

The reason you would have been moved on the list is to enable another patient to be operated on, recover, mobilise and be discharged home on the same day which is more likely in patients who opt for a spinal anaesthetic with or without sedation.

Ideally we want to be exploring the anaesthetic options at an earlier stage of your journey to support your decision making and preference.

Going forward I will share your feedback with the anaesthetic lead and team.

Thank you again for taking the time to feedback.

Best wishes in your continued recovery

Donna Knight
