"Staff attitude on maternity ward"

About: Maternity care / Maternity care (Ward 48)

(as the patient),

After I had my twin boys in March 2023, I had a midwife come into our private room who I found unpleasant and who started demanding me to get up and change my babies, saying they needed changing.   My kids were born early and were very sick - we thought they were reflux babys at this point.  I had only just changed them and they were sick again. I was an emergency c section.

They then proceeded to wake my partner up out of the chair where he had shut his eyes for a bit because he was up all night to let me sleep after surgery. I was really sore and tired. They told him if he wanted to sleep he should go home. I really don’t understand why they were allowed to speak to us the way they did! I didn’t answer back!

My own midwife assigned to me and my boys came in later that morning when shifts changed and they couldn’t apologize enough. They said they babies weren't dirty but were just sick.

Dear Julieanne123,

Thank you for taking the time to tell us about your experience here at the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital Maternity Unit and congratulations on the birth of your twin boys in March.

I am so sorry that you found the midwife caring for you overnight to be unpleasant and demanded that you get up to change your babies. As a team at QEUH Maternity, it is always our aim to provide safe, effective and person centred care in a kind and compassionate environment and I apologise that this was not your experience.

Please be assured that I will pass on your story to our postnatal teams and ask them to reflect on your experience and how we can learn from it and make improvements going forward.

My apologies again and best wishes.

Gaynor
