"I felt that my pain was invalidated"

About: Victoria Hospital / Out of Hours

(as the patient),

After being instructed to go there by 111 I was seen by a staff member who I found to be unprofessional and very rude. They said they didn’t understand why I was even there and didn’t listen to what I was saying.

I felt that my pain was invalidated my pain and they commented that everyone gets pain on their period, after I had said that I could have collapsed with how sore it was and that I have had a constant pain for over a month.

The staff member was checking my stomach and it looked like they smiled when I was clearly in pain. Then seemed inconvenienced by having to check if the pain killers I was being given interacted with other medication I’m on.

I was then given medication without checks to see if it interacted with my other medication. It did interact and could have caused me breathing problems when I already have asthma. Overall this was a terrible experience and I ended up in more pain, and made to feel as if I was making up how I was feeling.

Good evening Patient2004,

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience whilst visiting our Out of hours service, I do hope you are feeling better. I am saddened to read about your experience and wish to assure you this is not the service we aim to provide, for this I offer my apologies. I am sorry to hear you were left in more pain following your experience and that your concerns were not validated.

I would like to look into your case in more detail, as I believe there will be learning for the clinician involved and wonder if you could contact me at lynnette.marshall2@nhs.scot to provide some more information to allow me to do this.

Again, I offer my apologies and hope you are feeling better.

Kind regards,

Lynnette Marshall

Lead Nurse

Urgent Care Service Fife.
