About: Queen Elizabeth University Hospital Glasgow / Accident & Emergency Queen Elizabeth University Hospital Glasgow / Critical Care Queen Elizabeth University Hospital Glasgow / Intensive Care Unit (ICU) Queen Elizabeth University Hospital Glasgow / Orthopaedics (Wards 10a, 10b, 10c &10d) Scottish Ambulance Service / Emergency Ambulance

(as a service user),

My dad fell and lay overnight on his own as was home alone. Neighbours heard him shouting for help the next morning. No family members could get back quick enough. So fire brigade broke door down and made my dad comfortable until the ambulance arrived. Hardly much damage made on door and were very respectful.

Ambulance arrived very quickly and 2 lovely female staff dealt with my dad and had him in the ambulance when I arrived within 20 minutes of the fire service gaining access. Amazing prompt response.

The paramedics were so attentive and made my dad comfortable before heading to the hospital. Also allowing me (his daughter) and his son and grandson spend some time speaking to him. Although my dad played his injuries down. Lots of humour from paramedics to help me not get emotional and keep my dad distracted.  We were advised from paramedics to get a bag ready and contact the hospital in a few hours as unsure of waiting times. I managed to get his bag ready before the ambulance left which was good.

I called later that day and was allowed to visit, myself and my niece arrived. Despite a very busy accident and emergency department the receptionist was so welcoming and accommodating. We were taken promptly in to see my dad.  A few minutes on arrival, two doctors arrived and updated my dad about his broken femur at hip area and the 2 options he had. My dad agreed to operation understanding the risks. He was then checked for bed sores which put him in a lot of pain. I left the area as was too distressed. I was followed by the manager of porters to check I was OK and to show my to the area my dad would be coming out so I could wait there.

We were taken by the porter manager who was lovely and chatty to ward 10c. Unfortunately the room was not cleaned on arrival so my dad was in the corridor for around 45 minutes. During this time as staff were so attentive to both my dad and us making sure we had a chair during the wait. All staff were lovely but the ones that stood out were Agnes (auxiliary) and Ritchie (nurse).

They both had great banter with my dad and couldn't do enough. We got my dad settled then we left. When calling the ward was remembered by Agnes which was so nice. My dad was operated on in the morning and when I was calling the ward I was not made feel like I was a nuisance by Ritchie and told just to call back in an hour. I also was reassured that nothing was wrong by Ritchie when it had went on longer than expected.

When I called and Ritchie told me he was going to intensive care I instantly panicked. Again Ritchie reassured me the operation went well its more for monitoring his breathing and blood pressure. He advised the intensive care would call me direct and let me know the ward he was in.

My dad was taken to Critical Care Unit 6 where my dad found this hard as not all staff had the time to chat and due to only having access to staff assigned to him he found it isolating. Although the staff he had were lovely from facilities to nursing team. Sorry only names I remember are Romy, Roberto and Roland.

Unfortunately my dad was well enough to go to a ward but no beds available so was a little frustrated and bored. But at least able to sit on a chair and watch out the window.

My dad was then moved to ward 10d a few days later, again welcomed with open arms. Staff were lovely again. The other supply staff member was Robert who was so helpful, accommodating. Also didn't deal with the query and run off spent some time afterwards which was nice.

My dad was discharged today and taken home by ambulance and is now home safe and sound.

I cannot thank each and everyone of you from the bottom of my heart ♥️ for how well our experience has been from start to end. People are quick to complain but we need more people to take the time and let everyone know the good experiences too.

I feel staff working in hospitals should be on a higher grade than community! From facilities, porters, students, auxiliaries, nurses, doctors, surgeons. Remember you are all amazing 👏.  You save life's, you work under tremendous circumstances and pressures and having to deal with patients, their families and friends day in day out (the good, the bad and the ugly). Losing patients is hard for staff too but you continue and support the grieving families regardless.

Credit to you. Not the NHS credit to every single person working in a hospital, police and fire services. These are the people who should be the highest earners!

Dear Shahc96

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback here on CareOpinion. I am so sorry to read that your Dad had reason to use our Services and those of the wider NHS Scotland. I am so thankful your neighbours heard him shouting and then were able to get him the help he needed. What an awful worry this must have been for you all.

It's great to read all the lovely comments you have given to all the staff and particually to our ambulance crew who provided such humour which I am sure helped the situation greatly! If you would like me to pass on your kind words to our crew, I can certainly arrange that for you. What you would need to do is contact our feedback team at sas.feedback@nhs.scot with your dad's name, address and date of when we attended to him.

I really hope your dad is feeling much better and is on the road to recovery

Best wishes to you both and thanks again

Lesley
