"Staff saved the day after poor A&E experience"

About: Craigavon Area Hospital / Emergency Department Sexual Health / Contraception Service

(as the patient),

On Saturday night I was out and my drink was spiked, I have no recollection of what happened next but I knew I needed to seek medical attention.

I attended A&E on the Sunday and waiting all day and was never seen, I returned on the Monday and again waited all day and left late at night. The A&E was hot and busy and there were people everywhere, inside and outside, on the floors, they were clearly under pressure and understaffed. There were also signs all around stating long waits.

I eventually ended up being seen at Brownlow Health Centre by the family planning staff, who were amazing. The reason I needed to seek medical attention was that after the incident that occurred on Saturday night I knew I'd lost a Tampon internally. The staff at the health centre could not have been more understanding and I didn't feel judged at all. Honestly if it wasn't for them and their care and compassion I would have been in a huge predicament. They were so helpful and supportive. I was seen by 3 staff Oonagh & Kirsty (I think) and one other trainee member of staff. They were so on the ball removed the tampon and gave me emergency contraception,  I was so overwhelmed by everything, honestly they were 10/10. I wanted them to know how incredibly grateful I am.

Going back to the experience in A&E there were several things that were not ok:

1. Lack of privacy to explain what had happened to me without everyone being able to hear

2. Not even being called by the triage nurse in 2 days

3. I was informed they had rang on on my mobile on one of the days but I didn't receive a call. They had been ringing an old mobile number of mine from about 10 years ago. I was never asked at reception about my details being up to date on arrival. I know I have updated my mobile previously so something clearly was wrong with the system.

If it wasn't for the staff at the health centre I don't know what would have happened, they talked about the possibilities of having septicaemia or toxic shock.

I just don't want this to happen to anyone lese and there to be some learning from this ordeal.

Thank you so much for your feedback on the family planning team in Brownlow. I am so glad they were able to help and reassure you and I will be sure to pass on your thanks to them.

Dear mc8989

We apologise for what sounds like a terrible experience. In relation to ED,

Unfortunately the emergency department is an old building and the waiting room is very small. We have done some estate works to create extra capacity in the waiting rooms but when the department is overcrowded privacy can be challenging.

We do have a line that other patients queueing are advised to remain behind to maintain distance from the reception window. This should allow someone to use the microphone to speak quietly and this will be heard clearly by the administration team. The conversation should not project across the waiting area. If a person alerts admin staff they have some sensitive information to disclose, the admin staff take them to a side door to continue the conservation and complete the clerking in process.

The admin manager advises that it is procedure for admin staff to check all patients personal details in case they have changed. This should have happened and the admin manager apologises for this, she will remind all her staff of this procedure.

The triage nurse will call someone at least 3 times using the tanoy speaker system.

Kind regards

Paul Smyth

Head of ED
