I first received my pre screening test for cancer in 2019 when I was 60 years old. I was glad that I was on the pre-screening testing scheme and sent my samples as requested. I got a letter stating that I was clear.
My next pre-screening test was 2021 and again I received a letter giving me the all clear. This was a comforting thing to do and I encouraged my peers to make sure they do the same.
Again in February 2023 I received my pre-screening testing kit and completed and returned as usual. This time a letter informing me that there was an indication of blood in my stools and that this may not be serious but that a further test would be carried out. Yes I was slightly concerned but at least this would be checked out. I then prepared and attended my local hospital and had an endoscopy which checked me for cancer.
At the end of the endoscopy my doctor confirmed that I had cancer. I'm not sure if I would say that I was shocked or surprised as I could tell during the endoscopy that things were not looking great.
So fast forward a number of weeks and after a full body scan and a liver scan, I'm at hospital meeting my consultant regarding my situation. We discussed the operation, and in the Providence of God a cancellation appointment was available to me the next day which I readily accepted. I went home, gathered up suitable clothing for hospital and my good wife drove me to Altnagelvin where first thing next morning I was in the theatre.
So here I am, just 4 weeks post op, lying relaxing on my bed, feeling so much better, and my wound healing even though slowly, but thankful that my cancer was detected early thanks to the pre-screening test. Since that time I have talked to a few of my friends who have now made sure they completed and returned their tests.
As for me, I'm still on my journey waiting for an update on my situation and if I will need any further medical treatment. One thing for sure is that in the Providence of God, the pre-screening test has increased my chance of survival.
Just to add, the support from getting my endoscopy at Omagh, was very supportive, compassionate and caring. Really this was the theme that has carried out throughout my journey. From my consultant at Altnagelvin and the caring, compassionate, professional and people centred support from all the various nurses, auxiliary staff, university placements brought me much comfort and support.
Again the same care and concern has followed me into the community with the various district nurses that attend me and the very kind support from MacMillan. I am so thankful for each person that I have met in my journey and is a comfort to know that there are others in a similar situation as myself are getting such support and help.
"The importance of pre-screening testing for cancer."
