"My brothers poor care on the ward"

About: Adult Mental Health / Ward 1 (Adult Mental Health) Wishaw Locality Support Service / Community mental health team outreach

(as a relative),

My brother has chronic bipolar. He has been under psychiatric care for 30 yrs plus.  He became unwell in May. He was very agitated, anxious and frightened.  He has already attempted 3 overdoses in the past, once just 4 years ago.  He was booked a bed in ward 1 as he’s on a CT0.

I was with him and between us we packed a bag for hospital.  We received a call at lunch time to tell us that the doctor had cancelled his bed as Ward 1 wasn’t conducive to his illness. The doctor stated that it was very noisy, busy and understaffed.    Hairmyres was mentioned and I was happy for him to go there if it was quieter. Nothing transpired so I phoned a bit later on and was told that they thought he would be ok as he’d just had his depot injection and that he would be given diazepam the following morning

I left him as he told me he would be ok. My dad was going first thing the next morning to let workmen in to fix his kitchen.  When my dad arrived he noticed that his safe door was open. This is where his meds are kept due to previous overdoses.

My dad found him upstairs asleep and unresponsive. He had taken six days worth of meds.  He called an ambulance and he was taken to hospital

I had a meeting with the doctor today and said that they owed my brother an apology for cancelling his bed. If they hadn’t done this this overdose wouldn’t have happened. The doctor told me they knew nothing of the bed being booked or cancelled. And no apology was given

They also expected me to be at this meeting despite nothing being said to me from the hospital. My brother mentioned it when he called me previously but he was very elated still

When I asked about I was told it was just a MDT meeting and that I didn’t need to attend it. I just happened to be visiting my brother that morning - hence how I ended up in the meeting .

The doctor has also told us that he to be discharged tomorrow. That is another matter we’re dealing with as he is not ready to return home yet

I would like to know the truth behind why the bed was cancelled in the first place and who made the decision?

Dear Eaternx75,

I am sorry to hear about your brother's care experience and the distress this has caused him and your family. I have communicated all of your concerns and identified points to the clinical team. I would like to reassure your brother and your family that the multidisciplinary team are currently investigating your brother's care and treatment.
