My wife 85, a long retired nurse, attended a pre ops appointment for surgery. She hears through a cochlear implant so I, 88, was allowed to accompany her. By a good coincidence Hazel our nurse was also deaf with hearing aids so a bond was immediately established.
Another helpful and efficient presence was a student nurse who managed to extract blood at the first attempt. The examination was extremely thorough and reassuring. Surgery is for the removal of a cancer nodule in the groin which is naturally concerning for both of us. The appointment was carried out with great care and understanding but also with the human touch and with humour. My wife coming from a medical background and being a nurse herself was impressed and comforted by the experience. I being a retired Anglican bishop felt we were both being 'looked after' in what I called in my working days true pastoral care. Thank you Hazel and your assistant whose name we sadly could not remember.
