"Very distressing and painful procedure"

About: Western General Hospital / Urology

(as a relative),

My daughter has issues with her bladder and this has been for a long period of time and was offered Sacral Nerve Stimulation. She had the trial which was done under local anaesthetic and this was painful. She was made to believe the permanent procedure would be under general anaesthetic but it turns out it was under local and it was a very distressing and painful procedure.

I don’t think this is right that it is being done under local anaesthetic I understand there’s risks involved with general anaesthetic but having someone awake during this is just barbaric. This needs to be reviewed urgently it’s not fair for people going through this pain and distress.

Thank you for taking the time to feedback to us.

I am sorry to hear of your daughters experience.

While it is routine practice to use local anaesthetic and sedation for this procedure, due to the risks associated with a general anaesthetic, I am sorry that your daughter found it painful and distressing. If you would like to discuss this experience further then please do not hesitate to contact the NHS Lothian patient experience team who could support with this.

I hope that your daughter is now benefitting from the implant and that she has recovered well.

Elizabeth Clark

Clinical Nurse Manager, WGH
