"Experience relaying to ruptured ectopic June 2022"

About: Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh at Little France / Gynaecology

(as a service user),

I wanted to give some feedback regarding my experience of a ruptured ectopic pregnancy in June 2022. I can't thank Dr chamberlain and senior registrar Maeve, who saved my life. Maeve showed particular empathy and compassion in what was a very scary and distressing situation.

I consented to have a contraceptive implant inserted afterwards. I was counselled that the wait to have this as an outpatient was long and that a midwife working that day was trained in their insertion and could fit one opportunistically. While grateful for this sentiment, in retrospect it was too soon after my operation for me to have time to think about this. The insertion procedure was very painful (practitioner admitted needle with local anaesthetic wasn't far enough in and implant went further) and having chatted to friends who work in O&G since, do wonder if it was fitted in the correct position. Essentially I was unhappy a few weeks after with pregnancy hormones dropping after the ectopic and the implant hormones building therefore tried to have it removed. Due to long wait at my GP/Chalmers I ended up paying privately for a GP to remove it.  I would be grateful if the team could reflect on the timing of contraceptive counselling post traumatic pregnancy loss and perhaps review insertion sites/practitioner technique if not done regularly. Despite this experience, I am forever grateful to the team who undoubtedly saved my life and I am aware that the implant issue is small in relation to the bigger picture. Thanks for reading.

Dear funnywp96

Thank you for your positive feedback for Dr Chamberlain and Maeve. It is very kind of you to take the time to feed that back. I will pass it on to them both.

I note your concerns re the timing and application of the implant. If you would like this explored further please get in touch with our patient experience team and we can investigate this fully.

Kind regards

Donna Swinney

Clinical Manager
