"Poor experience in hospital"

About: University Hospital Hairmyres / Vascular Surgery (Ward 8)

(as the patient),

I was admitted into ward 8 at Hairmyers hospital.  I had bypass surgery on my leg and part amputation of my left foot.  All was fine until evening came and my tummy was telling me I needed to go to the toilet.  I suffer from a serious bowel problem and I don’t always know they have moved (the ward were made aware of this beforehand).

I buzzed for the nurses and 2 nursing assistants came up and asked me what do you want.  I asked for the shower chair to get pushed into the toilet and was told to walk.  I explained I had a problem with my feet and I had just had a big surgery that day. They suggested I just had a wee cut on my leg - yes, a wee cut was from my groin right down my leg to just above my ankle and then the part amputation on my foot.  I asked again and was accused of just wanting a fight.  I ended up walking to the toilet on my own, my bed was the furthest from the toilet, they did move me to the bed nearest to the toilet after a few days had passed.  When I buzzed for assistance I would be told to wait as they were busy and then wouldn’t come back.

There were some very nice staff but the few who weren’t just ruined it.  I was ill and needed to be treated better than I was.  I got taken back a couple of times that same month and basically nothing had changed.  I was admitted to get my leg elevated quite high - it never happened and when I mentioned it for the 100th time I was told I could have done it myself.  The remote to elevate the base of my bed was at the foot of the bed and didn’t stretch long enough.  They suggested the answer was to get out the bed and do it .. so I get out the bed, elevate the bottom and then how would I get back in?

I’m also diabetic and was having a hypo I buzzed and a nurse came in she asked what I did at home when I was in hypo because she didn’t know as she worked in a different ward.

I can honestly say I have found  ward 8 at Hairmyres hospital to be the worst ward in any hospital I have been in.

Dear empathych64

Thank you for your feedback, it is very important to us and helps us to make improvements for the benefit of our patients.

I am both sorry and disappointed to read your story regarding your recent stay in ward 8 at Hairmyres Hospital. The care which you describe is certainly not the standard which we would expect any patient in our hospital to receive.

In order for me to look into the exact details of your care and the points you have raised, I would ask you to contact patient affairs.

email: Patient.AffairsHairmyres@lanarkshire.scot.nhs.uk or telephone 01355 585325

Again, my sincere apologies are offered to you and I hope to have the opportunity to discuss your experience with you.

Kind Regards

Carol
