I had an appointment with my 7yo daughter, she is a non verbal autistic child and struggles with situations where she needs examined or have strangers in her personal space.
We saw one of the teams advanced nurse practitioners, (Trisha) she was amazing with my daughter, I was overwhelmed by the time, care and understanding she showed to her through the examination.
As a parent this was super reassuring and calmed my anxiety around visiting the practice as this is a trigger for my daughter. I feel this showed a range of skill, understanding and compassion for my daughters condition and how she may need to be supported to try and gauge what is wrong, even down to offering an alternative pain medication administration route to help, as she doesn't tolerate oral meds.
I feel this needs to be acknowledged, as a parent of a child with ASN its heart warming to know there are staff who understand and adapt to help her as best they can. I can feel a lot of stress taking her to the GP due to they way she can become agitated and upset, she can lash out and cries. There are times I can feel this looks poorly on me as a parent, however, when meeting with the is team member I felt better, more relaxed and understood as a parent, this nurse is an asset to the team and the service.
"This nurse is an asset to the team and the service."
