After injuring my ankle it remained painful and swollen and I was concerned I might have broken it. So I visited the minor Injuries Unit at Crosshouse Hospital in Ayrshire.
Once past reception, the experience was excellent and I found all of the staff remarkable. If someone had asked me to create a kind of "this is what we should aim for" statement from a patient's point of view, then my visit today would have been the model for it.
I was initially seen by a triage nurse, then by an outstanding nurse who examined my ankle and arranged for an immediate x-ray. The radiology team were also helpful and then it was back to the specialist nurse, who explained the situation and arranged a follow up visit for a week later.
I know that the NHS faces huge challenges and is being stretched beyond breaking point, and that means even more credit is due to the people who helped me today.
Very well done and many thanks for your kindness and professionalism.
