I am a second year adult nursing student and I was assigned to the district for my placement. I had the privilege of being assigned to observe and shadow two nurses in particular, Charmaine & Cheryl.
I had an amazing placement experience and I believe it was thanks to the two nurses that looked after me. Charmaine and Cheryl both made me feel so welcome and comfortable at this placement. They would put my name forward for experiences that would better my nursing skills and confidence as a student. They both took the time to explain clinical skills, documentation and nursing procedures to me. They really went above and beyond to enhance my learning opportunities and for me to really enjoy my placement in the community.
Both these nurses made me feel so at ease as they were so approachable about anything I wanted to ask or I wasn’t sure about. They involved me in their own training days which allowed my current knowledge to grow. They always took the time aside from their busy day at work to complete my portfolio for university. They were always aiming to grow my current skills and involve me in as much patient care to better myself as a student nurse. Always goal setting and aiming on what to do next and always asking me if there was anything they could do to help me get more out of this placement. To overall help me grow in confidence as I move onto future placements.
If every student receives mentors in their placements as I did they will be very lucky, as nurses like them make me remember why I want to do my nursing in the first place. Positive, kind, compassionate and very skilled nurses like Charmaine and Cheryl make me so excited for the future when I myself am a qualified nurse.
