"Our dear Dad"

About: Queen Elizabeth University Hospital Glasgow / Accident & Emergency Queen Elizabeth University Hospital Glasgow / Neurosurgery (Ward 64 – 66) Scottish Ambulance Service / Emergency Ambulance West Glasgow Ambulatory Care Hospital (Yorkhill) / Community Brain Treatment Service

(as a relative),

Over the last traumatic 6 months since we found our Dad in bed with blood coming out his right ear.  Finding out he had fractured his skull on right side with two bleeds in his brain he was discharged the very next day to our shock and horror.

The paramedics were absolutely brilliant, as were the nurse practitioner and nurse in A&E at the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow.

Sadly, a serious of absolute neglect and lack of care occurred repeatedly over the coming months. We really want to commend all the paramedics involved on each occasion.

Incredible support and care from Neurology. Thank you for taking the time to listen to me through what has seemed the impossible.  Truly grateful for you. Also to the health care worker at Langlands, who went above and beyond for every patient.

Social workers and staff from the advocacy project, having only met you both today before our Dad had a brain seizure. Thank you so much for caring and supporting today.  Thanks to the brain injury team at Yorkhill Hospital for all your care and being there for us as a family. Headway Glasgow has also been an incredible support. Also thanks to the domestic cleaner who  went out their way to help me.

So so much neglect and lack of care has happened since November, but at this time it is also important to praise the people who genuinely cared. As a family we have witnessed some terrible lack of care and empathy but we are grateful for each and every one mentioned who had supported us this far .

Dear Carltonboy,

I was very sorry to hear that your dad has been through so much since November. It must have been a worrying time for you as a family.

I was pleased to hear that there have been teams and individuals who have provided great care to your dad and I will share your kind feedback with our Neurology and Brain Injury Team who sit under Regional Services.

It was however concerning to hear of the poor experiences you had and I would be keen to understand this more to see how we can learn from your feedback. I can be contacted at elaine.burt@ggc.scot.nhs.uk if you would like to get in touch.

Thank you again for taking the time to share this feedback and I hope your dad is progressing with his rehabilitation.

Kind Regards

Elaine Burt

Dear Carltonboy,

I am sorry to hear of your dad's injury and the challenging recovery you have all experienced to date. I am pleased to see that there are teams and individuals within the Neurology and CTCBI services who have provided great care and hope that this will benefit your dad in his longer term recovery. I will ensure that this feedback is passed on to them, positive feedback goes a long way in boosting morale and they will be proud to know that they have had such a positive impact on you all.

I am obviously saddened to read that you have concerns regarding other aspects of his care and as Elaine and David note, would be keen to hear how we can further investigate and learn from these concerns. I appreciate that you have been offered contact details already to further discuss these, but if there is anything further that I can do to support please do not hesitate to contact; eilidh.gallagher@ggc.scot.nhs.uk.

Thank you for taking the time to share your experiences, these stories make a huge difference in helping us to learn and improve but also to celebrate success.

Wishing you all well in your dads ongoing rehabilitation.

Kind Regards,

Eilidh Gallagher
Clinical Service Manager - Neurology and CTCBI
