I was involved in an accident when I was on my bike ( cycle ). I was hit by a car coming from a side street. Initially taken to Crosshouse but injuries too serious so moved Queen Elizabeth.
Where I was there receiving on the whole excellent treatment both before my operation. Left leg amputated below the knee also, right hip fractured and on my rehab physios were amazing and I was trying hard to work with them.
I was informed I was going to Crosshouse (missed a bed slot on the previous Friday as I was unwell (flare up of my Collititus).
I stated would it not be better in the morning as I had a 9 am appointment with Westmarc to get measured for a wheelchair, also meeting with OT as regards washing and dressing (still awaiting this appointment, managing but am I wasting energy doing it wrong).
Before leaving the Queen Elizabeth, I asked if I would definitely get a wheelchair at Crosshouse Hospital. Yes, I was told.
So to Crosshouse arrived just after 6 pm, taken into ward 5, elderly patients all look like they have dementia (feel really bad for them). Nurse says to the ambulance team just transfer him to bed. My reply stop, I am self transferring bed to chair ETC.
So, please bring my wheelchair. The nurse's reply was that we do not have one. My morale and spirits nose dived.
I asked and got moved rooms, unfortunately not much improvement as the patient next to me was in a life threatening position, that and a few others patients in severe discomfort.
22 30-ish, drug trolley comes round. OK, at least I will get my pain killers ETC.
Goes around the room, 7 beds, just leaving. I enquire excuse me where's mine.
Was told my records have not come through so without them they cannot give me anything.
Result: no sleep, in pain all night.
In morning ask to speak to the bed manager and whoever is in charge.
To be fair a consultant and trauma manager come and speak to me.
My point to them was they ticked a box as regards getting me moved, but it should be patient welfare first not last, especially the no wheelchair.
And to conclude the issue with my pain relief and the absolute debacle of my prescription not coming through could have been life threatening so please learn from it.
"It should be patient welfare first not last"
