"Poor treatment in hospital"

About: Pilgrim Hospital / Accident and emergency Pilgrim Hospital / Gynaecology

(as the patient),

I was admitted to the ward and sat in a chair to await the doctor. I was sat with no medication to help with the pain and the nurses response was that there is nobody available to prescribe anything I’m afraid and we cannot use your prescription from a&e. I was finally seen by a doctor at which point they told me I was being admitted and as we started to talk about the problems, they were paged and had to run off.

After being properly admitted I was shown to my room and went to sleep. I woke up in the middle of the night in agony and feeling sick. I buzzed, the doctor came gave me anti sickness and pain relief - this was the last time I saw a doctor in my experience but I was glad to finally be given some relief.

The morning saw nurses coming to check I was ok (I could hear from my room that they were having a quality assurance check) after they were given the results of their check I then had no visit from anybody.

I had an ultrasound scan in the mid morning the following day. Despite hearing doctors on the ward nobody came to see me at all. My mum arrived for visiting and not a single person had entered the room up to that point and nobody entered the room up until early evening when we left. We had had enough of begging for someone to see us and not being given pain relief because there was no one available to prescribe and doctors were too busy to talk to me.

That night I heard the doctor on the ward discussing my case - they said he was going to get a sandwich so I quickly buzzed. The nurse came in and I said before he goes could I please, please, please just ask them a question - they said no problem I'll just go and get them. With that the corridor went silent. The nurse came back in (I think they were just a healthcare assistant as they all were) and told me they have gone for changeover so unfortunately they cannot speak to you. I couldn't believe they had actually run away.

Me and mum said we'd had enough and wanted to self discharge. A senior nurse came and was so rude. They said these doctors are too busy and if there was a problem you could've pressed your buzzer - mum explained that if I had passed out how would I have been able to press the buzzer. The nurse said it's the way things are done here and seemed completely disinterested.

I laid in that room for 18 hours, alone with no care. No doctors. No results from my scan. Listening to numerous complaints being made over the phone and from relatives during visiting hours. It was an absolute shambles. I will never ever go back to Ward 1B. I have never felt so neglected in all of my life.

They need a doctor who does not go down to theatre whose job it is to stay and care for patients, prescribe medication and discharge people/go through a diagnosis. I feel that there was no need for me to have been in hospital for that long.

All we hear on the news is lack of beds, but had I been spoken to hours before I could have been out and dealt with to free up space. Today I have been to my local GP. My notes are not on the system. Nothing is logged. They are outraged and like us, extremely disappointed. Something on the ward needs to change.
