"I was recently admitted to QMC ..."

About: Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust - City Campus

(as the patient),

What could be improved

I was recently admitted to QMC A&E Department and had to stay in for two nights. I was placed on ward B3 and in view of all the Infection Control drives which have been occurring over the past year or so I was quite shocked to find the state of the toilets / bathrooms on the ward. There were only 3 to server quite a large ward (one which was out of order anyway) and of the two remaining toilets, they were both filthy! It has played on my mind for the past few weeks and I just feel the need to tell someone. Everything in them was dirty. The toilet & seat, sink, taps, bins (which were also overflowing several times with allsorts of towels / nappies / sanitryware etc!), the floor, mirrors, walls - it was awful! Much of it was fresh 'daily dirt' and also much of it was ingrained dirt which 'could' have easily been cleaned.

Please, please, please clean up at least the bathrooms on wards, it is so unpleasant when you are ill and away from home, without having to worry about catching further infections.

Many thanks.

Reducing infections and patient safety is our number one clinical priority. We are sorry that your experience during your stay with us was not a positive one. It is unacceptable that standards of cleanliness on the ward you mention were below the high levels we would expect in our hospitals. We take your comments extremely seriously and would like to reassure you that we have taken immediate action to improve standards of cleanliness on the ward.

To ensure standards are being met and maintained the domestic supervisor carries out regular audits with the ward manager. There are now notices on all of the toilets on the ward asking patients to inform a member of staff if the facilities need attention. This ensures cleanliness issues are picked and rectified in a timely manner. The ward manager has fed back your comments to the domestic team on the ward concerned.
