After having passed a 6mm stone and sending it to surgery for analysis. Only to find out Dr binned it. After over the phone consultation Dr kept giving contradictory information. Yet, I was assured the scans showed a kidney stone stuck in the right kidney. In order to have a stone for analysis out of all the options I opted for a keyhole operation to retrieve the stone for analysis.
When I finally had an appointment at Treliske I was confronted with a completely different scenario. Kidney stone was in the left ureter and no keyhole operation instead a ureterorenoscopy was programmed. I was not informed of this. On the spot I was pressure into making a decision that was not the best one.
The Dr spoke to me and gave me a tablet with a page to sign a consent. I asked what I was signing and if I could read it. Dr said it was the same he had told me and it would take another 10 minutes to read it. I found that a non surgical intervention was available. Dr said it had been too long and no changes so not really viable. This was not true as actually there had been no conventional methods used before attempting surgery. As such a decision was made under pressure. No stone was able to be removed and a stent was put in place. Antibiotics were meant to be subscribed and they weren't. Excruciating pain and an infection followed. Unable to contact anyone for removing the stent as weekend and bank holiday.
My life quality has been cut in more than half. With four young dependents and unable to work and provide for my family or support as a parent. Ended up worse than I was. Absolutely unacceptable. Very disappointing. Being a healthcare professional myself I could easily pinpoint the lack of care and the flaws in the service provided by the urology department for the NHS at Southwest Cornwall.
