"Amazing care on the ward"

About: Crosshouse Hospital / General Surgery

(as a service user),

I was admitted to Ward 4A in January with my 5 week old baby having developed choleocystitis after my pregnancy, I was in for 4 days and the care I received was wonderful, the staff were fantastic.

I was discharged to come back as an elective surgery to have my gallbladder removed however in Late March my gallstones became acute again. From the moment I arrived at A&E with my now 11 week baby in tow the care I received was absolutely phenomenonal. The staff were all so responsive and caring in helping me continue my breastfeeding journey and my husband had open access to the ward to bring baby in to feed. I was given a side room due to various infections in other rooms in order to minimise risk to my baby and the nurses and doctors were totally diligent at cross referencing all my medications with the Breastfeeding network to ensure no harm would come to baby. They supported me through my surgery and then a case of pancreatitis which led to further surgery 4 days later and a really painful and difficult few days. But they kept me so well supported it made the time pass quickly.

After 11 days on the ward we had been so amazingly cared for and both my baby & 4 year old were so well welcomed by the fantastic staff. From the HCA's, DA's,  phlebotomists, the nurses (especially Sarah, Ashley, Alana, Kareen, Chrissy & Eilidh), the registrars and junior doctors and Mr Robertson's team all took such good care of me and made what could have been a really traumatic time with such a young baby & son, so easy for us all to manage despite the circumstances.

They are all working so hard for so many people but made me feel totally safe the whole time I was in. I cannot thank them enough.

Also big thank yous to the staff in 4C who both times I was in with them were fantastic and saw me again yesterday and remembered me and asked after baby . Also the team in the Dining room who kept my husband and 4 year old smiling (and fed during visits! Best hospital food we've had!) and again remembered them just yesterday when we had to pop back in for a follow up appt and My 4 YO wanted to see what the pudding options were again.

Having people say hello and ask how things have been and how they are now also made them feel so cared for. We know you must see thousands of folk a month and just being recognised and asked after made the care all the more special.

Crosshouse and the Maternity unit has provided me with such professional, proficient and compassionate care in the last 12 months I don't know how I can ever repay their amazing skills, talent and compassion but it is 100% the best hospital i have ever been cared for at. Thank you to all the staff.

Dear Carwise22,

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback on the care received in our surgical department at University Hospital Crosshouse.

It is wonderful to hear that the team were able to support the compassionate care we strive for and in your case to welcome those that matter to you most to enable you to feel safe and continue caring for your new baby while not disrupting your breastfeeding.

I will ensure that your kind feedback is shared with Mr Robertson and Senior Charge Nurse Birtles to share wider with their clinical teams and to our catering department for their amazing puddings!

Best wishes,

Emma
