(as a relative),

Diagnosed with breast cancer my wife received surgery at the Royal Gwent Hospital, Newport.

Although the surgery was a success, she developed sepsis and other infections, her outpatient care was practically non existent, the Breast care nurse who told us she would be her support throughout, actually only came out to see her once, and actually phoned the house 2 weeks after my wife was discharged after being rushed into hospital with sepsis, and didn't even know about it!

Now having problems with after treatment, my wife's GP has contacted the consultant Mr Gateley about 12 times by mail in the past 5 months for advice on her treatment and left messages for him but without getting any form of response or reply.

At our wits end now and ashamed that we are having to beg for help and advice from the NHS.

Thank you for submitting your comments. I am very sorry that you have cause for complaint following your wife's surgery.

Without knowing your exact details, we cannot respond to all of the issues you raise. However I hope the following information will be of value.

We do occasionally have patients readmitted with sepsis. This is managed in hospital until a response to treatment is obtained and then the patient is discharged to ongoing care in the community with the District Nurse Service.

The Breast Care Nurse is a contact point, will offer support and try to ensure that the appropriate care is received. They however do not undertake the daily nursing duties which is the responsibility of the District Nurse Service.
