I recently had an experience as an inpatient at Ward 3, Ninewells Hospital, and I wanted to share my story.
Recently, I arrived at the ward and was greeted by some nursing assistants who were initially very unpleasant to me. They seemed annoyed to be there and made everything feel like a huge task. One of them, was particularly rude. However, things took a turn for the better when I met a nursing assistant..
This nursing assistant who was actually on their induction shift that day. Despite this, they were absolutely brilliant and so much more caring than the other nursing assistants. They took the time to speak to all the patients and reassure them, especially one gentleman who was anxious about a procedure he was due to undergo. They were clearly prioritising everything they needed to do while also taking the time to be kind and compassionate.
I spoke to the nurse in charge of my care and they apologised for the behaviour of the other nursing assistants. The nurse in charge told me that they should have been supporting the other nursing assistant. I felt so bad for this nursing assistant, but they dealt with the situation so well.
Towards the end of their shift, the two other nursing assistants went and sat at the desk and chatted for the next 30-45 mins while the third one continued to make sure everyone was okay, topping up water and emptying catheter bags. I was so impressed by this persons professionalism and their caring nature. They really went above and beyond to make sure we were all comfortable and well looked after.
I hope this message gets back to this nursing assistant and they know what an asset they are to the NHS. They truly made a huge difference to my experience at the hospital and I am grateful for their care and attention.
