"That young nurse is a role model"

About: Royal Belfast Hospital for Sick children / Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU)

(as a parent/guardian),

My daughter was admitted to picu in march. She has been in hospital a few times.

The nurses in picu were brilliant. Victoria was wonderful when we got to picu and Katie was so lovely, friendly and took time with my girl. She seen a lot of nurses in and out of hospital.

Alex in picu was incredible with her. She spoke to her as a teenager and woman and not to me and her granny. Trying to make her more independent. She treated her like a young woman with hope and positivity. That she deserves to look after herself and can still live her life if she takes her insulin. She didnt pretend to understand diabetes but chat with my girl as a young woman. She counted carbs, talked about food with her, her wee weight and being in big school, her body, how she feels, school and when she grows up. Not like a nurse, just like a big sister or friend.

That young nurse is a role model. Just wanting my girl to be healthy and happy. Words aren't enough.

Dear @eandel78

Thank you for your very kind words of appreciation for the nursing staff in the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) in the Royal Belfast Hospital for Sick Children.

As one of the managers in the hospital, I witness the humanity and dedication our staff show towards our patients and their families every day and it fills me with great pride and honour to work there, but even more so when someone sees and experiences that, and takes the time to acknowledge this.

Having a child in PICU must be one of the most traumatic and stressful times parents can face and I can only imagine how frightening this must be, so thank you for taking the time to share your experiences.

Our staff do everything they can to care for, and look after, the children in our care, and help their family/parents etc. through that experience too, and a real bond is often built as a result.

I have shared your very thoughtful words with the team in PICU who will in turn share with Victoria and Alex in particular. We all wish your daughter well and hope that continues to recover from her experiences, and gets the help and information she needs to manage her condition.

Ciaran
