"Forth Valley A&E"

About: Forth Valley Royal Hospital / Accident & emergency

(as a service user),

Been having issues post-wisdom tooth removal resulting in infection. I was advised by my dentist to attend Forth Valley A&E should my infection travel any further down my face as I may require IV antibiotics. The infection moved and as instructed I went to FVRH. I was triaged relatively quickly but from then on was reminded several times that they weren’t dentists and while sat in the hospital was advised by a nurse to call NHS24 as the wait time to be seen was 4 hours and their shift ended in 15 minutes. They were also quick to remind me I should’ve went to the Monklands as that’s my local hospital despite the dentist explicitly telling me to go to FV.

I had called NHS24 the night before who were unable to help other than give advice and advised to make an appointment at my dentists the next day, which I did. So I was fully aware that NHS24 had limited capacity to help but was still told to phone them. I reminded them that this was no longer strictly a dental issue and that my face was becoming increasingly red and swollen but it was evident the nurses only priority was finishing their shift as I was sent back out to the waiting room completely confused as to what I was to do (other than phone NHS24 if I wanted to) and had no clue what the process at the hospital was from then on. I was eventually seen by the doctor and after a total of 7.5 hours in A&E was sent home with no treatment and feeling worse than I did when I went in.

I appreciate the hospital staff from nurses to doctors are extremely busy and have to prioritise but after the dentist emphasising how important it was for me to be checked out if anything changed, I was shocked at the lack of reassurance from most of the staff (except both students I seen who were lovely) and how I was made to feel stupid for even coming to the hospital in the first place.

Dear hadarge46,

Thank you for taking the time to share your recent experience in the Emergency Department and I’m so sorry to learn of how you were made to feel whilst attending the department. I can assure you that the experience you have described is not the level of care we strive to provide.

I would like the opportunity to look into this further for you and would be grateful if you could email me directly at ric.atalla@nhs.scot to share more detail around your experience.

Once again I’m sorry that this was your experience and do hope you are now feeling better.

Kind regards

Ric Atalla, Interim Operational Manager, Emergency Care & Inpatients
