"Extremely good service"

About: Old Age Psychiatry / Psychiatry Of Old Age Occupational Therapy

(as the patient),

Review of the service provided by Occupational Therapy in Psychiatry of Old Age, Perth & Kinross.

I feel that the service provided was extremely good. I was visited monthly and given very useful practical advice and signposted to other services.

I would have benefited from more help with Carers information. I am in my eighties and have a son in his 50s living locally with Multiple Sclerosis who I am finding it increasingly difficult to support and this causes most of my anxiety and concerns.

It may have helped to have had this service for longer as they were so helpful.

Dear Enid12345

Thank you so much for your lovely feedback about your experience of the service provided by Occupational Therapy in Psychiatry of Old Age. It is always encouraging for the staff members in the team to receive feedback like this and the team work very hard to do their best to make everyone's experience a positive one.

I was especially glad to hear that you found the practical advice very useful.

As a team we do our best to work with people for a length of time that is best for them, however I do understand that sometimes it may feel like it would have been helpful to have the service for a bit longer.

I have sourced information about the local Perth and Kinross MS group if you don't already have this information and hope that you will feel able to contact them to find out more about what they might be able to offer you and your son.

I wish both you and your son the best for the future

yours sincerely

Dear Enid12345

Thank you for your comments.

I'm sorry that you have not been able to get information about carer services. PKAVS Carers Hub are the first point of contact for all carers in the area and together we try to get information about the support unpaid carers are entitled to, to every carer who needs it. We appreciate how difficult it can be for unpaid carers looking after someone, the concerns they have about the person they care for, and how important it is that carers look after themselves.

I know that the most important thing for any carer is that the person they care for is getting the help and support they need. Perth & Kinross MS Society group should be able to advise about the help they offer for your son, alongside the MS Service based at Ninewells.

I have been in touch with Hazel to arrange getting leaflets about the support available to the OT Service at Murray Royal in the next few days - so that yourself and other carers using the service can get the support they need as carers. I will also be looking at other services to check that they have carer information available.

The contact number for PKAVS Carers Hub is 01738 567076 (Option 2) or you can email them at carershubadmin@pkavs.org.uk and they will be able to advise you about the support they can give you, including referrals to other services.

I hope you are able to get the support you need for both yourself and your son.

Hello Enid 12345

I wanted to let you know the progress we are making as a result of your feedback as it is important for us to be sure that carers are aware of how to get the support they are entitled to.

We are getting new “Supporting Unpaid Carers” booklets printed which will include a section on Carers Rights and once they are available, we will distribute them to as many health and social care professionals as we can.

We are also going to start on a schedule of training specifically for health professionals about Carers and their challenges and rights. We hope this will ensure that carers, meeting any health or social care professional, will be able to access the information that they need when they need it.

Perth and Kinross Council’s website pages (www.pkc.gov.uk) about the support that is available to carers, are also under review to make sure they provide current, accurate information so that carers know where they can get the help and support they want.

Thank you again for taking the time to provide feedback and help us make positive changes to improve patient experiences. Please do get in touch by email if you would like to discuss your experience in more detail, we would be happy to hear from you.

Best Regards

Alison Gallacher
