"Poor CT scan experience"

About: North Devon District Hospital / Radiology (X-ray)

(as the patient),

Went to Barnstaple Hospital for a CT scan in a mobile unit.

On arrival no one seemed to know where I needed to wait. No clear signage.

After speaking to 3 people I found the right area.

Two staff arrived and I was asked to follow one into the mobile scanner. They didn't come across as being confident at all. I asked if I could see the health checklist as I couldn't understand what they were saying.

I then lay on the bed. They didn't really explain the procedure with the breathing etc so I had no real idea what was going to happen. I had to lower my trousers (as they had metal on the waistband) but they had already put a needle in my arm and connected it to a curly tube so it was hard to do it without it pulling. Also I asked him to inject my left arm but they then stretched the curly cable right across me to connect it! It would have been better to move the machine over or I could have used my right arm!

Afterwards I was told to drink water but not given any or told where to get some.

When I went back in the waiting room a staff member was able to direct me to a water machine. One member of staff then said out loud for all to hear that they hadn't got any stuff with them if anyone has a reaction so they had better get it in a minute and continued to sit and talk!!

Totally unorganized, no one seemed very confident in their work. Couldn't wait to get home.

I am a Diagnostic Radiographer with many years experience of working, and imaging patients, in all areas of the Radiology department. I am also responsible for the governance in Radiology and so make sure that we are compliant with the many ionising radiation regulations that dictate what we can and can't do in radiology, keep the patients and staff safe and ensure we are practicing safely. I also deal with our policies and procedures and oversee compliments, complaints and quality.

Dear Jandr55,

Thank you taking the time to leave feedback following your CT scan on the mobile scanner; I'm so sorry that it wasn't a good experience for you.

The mobile scanners are run by an external company and not our staff at NDDH, unfortunately as Care Opinion anonymises all feedback I am unable to look further into this for you at this time, however if you would like to contact me separately (gillian.kite@nhs.net) with some more details so that we can find out which scanner and team were involved I would be very happy to look at it further and speak to the company about your experience.

Another option, if you would rather not contact me directly is to contact the PALS office at NDDH (rduh.pals-northern@nhs.net or 01271 314090) to register your concerns, including the date of your scan, that will then get investigated from this end.

Kind regards

Gill
