"Shocking discharge home for a vulnerable elderly man"

About: Crosshouse Hospital / Combined Assessment Unit (CAU)

(as a relative),

My father-in-law was a patient at Crosshouse clinical assessment unit and was discharged home in a taxi whilst he was in a confused state.  The taxi driver was given his address to return him home however due to his confused state of mind he was driven around and taken to a different address, my address where I wasn’t home.  Thankfully my neighbour was able to assist the taxi driver, however my father in law didn’t know where he lived or how to get there.  Why was he discharged being such a vulnerable man in a vulnerable state of mind into a taxi? Shocking care along with no discharge care for his wife.

Dear 11 NHS Patient,

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. I was so sorry to learn of your father-in-law’s poor experience, following his discharge from the Assessment Unit. Please be assured this is not the person-centred care that we aim for. We would welcome the opportunity to review your concerns in more detail and if that would be helpful, please contact myself, Ms Nancy Wallace (Clinical Nurse Manger), either by email, nancy.wallace7@aapct.scot.nhs.uk or by phone 01563 825965.

With best wishes,

Nancy

Clinical Nurse Manager,

Combined Assessment Unit
