"It means a lot to finally be listened to"

About: Mental Health / Adult Autism Services

(as the patient),

My initial consultations with the Adult Autism Team, Greater Glasgow and Clyde, were not very positive at all, I even had to raise a formal complaint. I am pleased to say that after continuing to engage with the team and being assigned a new specialist to access me, my opinion has been turned around.

I cannot thank Clinical Autism Specialist Caroline enough for all her help. For the first time ever I felt seen and understood and not dismissed like other clinicians on the team had made me feel.

Caroline was patient with me throughout the assessment process and she made the process as quick and as easy as it could be. When she told me that I was indeed autistic it did not come at all as a surprise, but I was just relieved that I finally had the answer I needed and had been struggling with my whole life.

Following on from the diagnosis she continued to help and support me. She helped me explore in more detail my strengths and weaknesses, answering any questions I had and told me if I have any questions in the future not to hesitate to get in touch.

I cannot express just how knowledgeable and professional she was. It is the way I would have hoped to have been treated from the beginning and even exceeded my expectations in terms of the insight she was able to give me about myself and my condition. Based on my experience, I think some of the team could learn a lot from her.

I do not want to end this on a negative note. I just want to say thank you to Caroline for everything. I appreciate you taking the time to understand. It means a lot to finally be listened to.

Dear Sunno)))

My name is Tom Kelly and I am Head of Adult Services: Learning Disability and Recovery for East Renfrewshire Health and Social Care Partnership.

I appreciate that you have taken the time to provide feedback on your experiences with the Adult Autism Team. I am sorry to read that the first contact with the team resulted in you feeling dismissed and misunderstood. I am glad that you continued to engage with the team and that would have been welcomed from all of the staff.

I will pass on your feedback to Caroline and the team on the impact that your journey of understanding and receiving your diagnosis has made to you.

I am glad you feel listened to and please accept my best wishes.

Tom
