About: The Ulster Hospital / Laser Suite

(as a parent/guardian),

My 6-year-old son had an appointment letter to attend today for laser surgery. The appointment letter outlined that he would have a general anaesthetic and needed to fast all day.

Appointment was not until 3:30pm. I phoned at time of letter to confirm these details as he has just had a general anaesthetic (with fasting) one month ago and it was hard for him.

With this confirmed my husband took my son to his appointment, to be told he did not need to fast and it was a meet & greet appointment.

To put a 6 year old boy through needless fasting and stress is unacceptable, especially considering his history and that I phoned up to clarify. I am so dissatisfied with how this appointment was managed.

Dear MumAof3

Thank you for sharing the recent experience of your son at Laser Suite.

I apologise to you for the unnecessary fasting that your son was put through and for the failure to clarify the appointment accurately when you took the trouble to seek clarification. This is definitely not an experience that wish to have for our children and families and is an item that I will follow up on across services.

I hope that all goes well for your son and again I apologise for this failure and the hardship caused.

Best wishes

Conor
