I had a bilateral neuphrostomy at the RVH in March 2023. My post care in hospital was really poor and I was discharged with mixed to no after care information. My district nurse did not know I had the procedure or to come and assist with the dressings. There was a complete breakdown in communication between hospital and community teams.
Since then, I was back in the BCH with bleeding at one site. I was checked by both urology and oncology multiple times and tests were carried out. I spent 1 night in hospital but the teams were happy to discharge me with no treatment and without determining a source of bleeding.
At no point in hospital was my dressing checked or changed, nobody checked the site. Today my district nurse changed the dressing as scheduled and found that it is infected and I have had to start an emergency antibiotic.
They are very concerned that when I went to hospital with the bleeding last week, no one checked the site or dressing and I was discharged without the dressing being changed. This could have (and maybe) infecting my kidneys. Hopefully they have caught it quickly enough and there will not be a serious kidney infection.
