"Immediately attended to upon arrival"

About: Craigavon Area Hospital / Emergency Department Craigavon Area Hospital / Intensive Care Unit Northern Ireland Ambulance Service / Emergency Control

(as a staff member posting for a carer/relative),

My dad fell seriously ill and we were promptly advised to take him to the ED here in Craigavon. Despite not being able to secure an ambulance as they told us the wait would be 5 hours, we were fortunate enough to have a family member who helped us transport him to the hospital, I personally feel that there should be something done about the ambulance service wait as if we didn't have our family member to take us we would have had to wait that length for an ambulance which could have made the situation a lot worse with no lift.

Upon arrival, we were immediately attended to by a nurse who admitted my dad to the high dependency unit where he received excellent care. Within an hour, he was transferred to the ICU ward where the doctors and nurses provided outstanding care, updating us regularly on her progress. We trusted that he was in safe hands and were grateful for the amazing care he has been getting so far. He has now been in ICU for five days, and we can already see significant improvement, all thanks to the swift actions of the GP, ED doctors, nurses, and ICU charge nurse. We are incredibly thankful for everything the hospital staff did, despite their busy schedules.

I would like to begin by thanking you for taking the time to share your experience of the Northern Ireland Ambulance Service. As an organisation we are committed to consistently show compassion, professionalism and respect for the patients we care for, so it was disappointing to learn that the service provided did not fully meet your expectations. With regards to our response times please be assured that we are working closely with the Department of Health and the Strategic Planning and Performance Group to increase our available resources. We are also working with the local emergency departments to try to ensure that our patients can be handed over to hospital clinical teams as quickly as possible so that ambulance are able to respond to further emergencies.

Best wishes

Ruairi Cummings

Thank you very much for taking the time to provide some feedback about your family's experience of ICU. When a relative is in ICU it can be such difficult and anxious time and I am glad you and your family felt well supported. It is always lovely to hear such positive comments and I will ensure that your comments are passed onto the ICU team.

Regards

Emmajane Kearney
