"Positive gynae experience"

About: Glasgow Royal Infirmary / Day surgery The Princess Royal Maternity Unit / Gynaecology

(as the patient),

Originally seen 4.5 years ago. No childbirth and nearly 5 years past menopause. After TVUS, the original consultant,  said a biopsy was needed. No further information offered from consultant on procedure or offering to stop if the biopsy was too painful. Traumatic does not describe the event. Unbeknown to me they proceeded to dilate my cervix which resulted in me literally screaming, not a yell, but scream, 3 times, but they carried on, before the Pipelle was used for the biopsy. The biopsy itself was just bearable by using a breathing technique. Couldn't wait to get out of there!!

Ultimately with no further information, received an appointment to see another consultant. I  arrived at said appt and I asked why I was there. The consultant looked at my notes, paused and then said for a Hysteroscopy for a possible polyp.  They then asked had I not received any notification from previous appt and I replied I had not. No way was I having this procedure carried out without a GA. I left the appt. and 2 days later received a letter from original consultant saying everything was  reassuringly normal and didn't need to be seen again.

Move on to present day now appx. 10 years past menopause and I was having some vaginal bleeding after bowel movements and a few weeks later was due a smear. Nurse saw polyp protruding from cervix. Within a very short time was seen by a Dr who was assisted by nurse at Stobhill. What a difference. Everything was explained and I agreed to them trying to remove the polyp . No entry into the cervix was required at this time. I was reassured that they would stop any time I asked. This was successful with a bit of discomfort but not unbearable.
A hysteroscopy was recommended and I agreed provided it was under GA.
They explained, then listened and did not dismiss my concerns, and no undue pressure to agree to IUD after I had carried out my own research. Again all appts were very quickly arranged.  So far, the outcome is looking very favourable and a very caring Dr. has restored some of my faith in the medical profession.
So a huge thank you to the doctor and the staff involved at theatre, recovery and Ward 56 at the Glasgow Royal Infirmary.
Would certainly recommend this doctor as a Gynae Consultant!

Dear Ealasaid

Thank you for sharing your feedback on Care Opinion.

Thank you very much for commenting on how well the team met your needs during your recent episode of care at the New Stobhill Hospital and Glasgow Royal Infirmary. I am genuinely very sorry it didn't start the same way at your appointment 4.5years ago. We now encourage patients to take some painkillers an hour or so before their appointment to reduce any pain or discomfort they experience.

I have shared your feedback with Lead Clinician and Senior Charge Nurse They are delighted to receive this.

I hope you are doing well at this time and recovered well from your procedure.

Best wishes

Isabel Traynor

Update posted by Ealasaid (the patient)

I was very specific in the use of my original wording for various reasons.

I do have some experience of case histories

Unfortunately, assumptions have been made in the response regarding possible pain control. Having passed menopause with no childbirth there was always the possibility of some cervical stenosis and taking this into account I can 100% confirm that I did indeed take 2 Ibuprofen 1.5hrs. prior to original appt. as per recommendation in the booklet that accompanied the original appt. letter.

I had notated the latter part of the last sentence of the second paragraph and ended it with a question mark to bring attention to the fact this letter was received 2 days after the second appt. and had to have been dictated by the original consultant prior to the second appt where it was deemed that I required a polypectomy during an outpatient hysteroscopy and because of the grammatical changes your Moderator effected, this altered the reasoning I attempted to clarify regarding a timeline.

It would be interesting to know if the lead clinician who has been updated regarding my experience was the original consultant. I won't name the consultant, as you seem to have found it necessary to delete the name of the second consultant for whom I have the utmost respect.

And finally, 'They', didn't explain, the consultant explained the reasoning for hysteroscopy.

Apologies for being such a long winded response, but I dislike ambiguity in any form.

Thank you.

Dear Ealasaid

My name is Chris and I am one of the moderators at Care Opinion.

I wanted to address your comments about our moderating. I am sorry that when we removed the dates from your story that it confused the timeline of events. We remove dates from stories to protect the identities of patients and staff. All feedback should be anonymous and we also do not want staff to be identified negatively. This is written in our moderation principles that we display on the site and, in our moderation policy and guidelines for moderators. Our aim is to always ensure the original meaning in a story and I sorry this was not the case in this instance.

Equally, we will remove identifying information where we suspect there are small numbers of staff in any one treatment area, and it may be possible to identify individual staff members.

When we email story tellers about their story we say “If we can, we publish your story just as you wrote it. Sometimes we have to edit stories a little bit so that we can publish them. We explain why we sometimes do this in our moderation principles”.

This means we only email people if we have to make very large edits to stories. We don’t usually consider removing dates or names from stories to be large edit, as we hope we can do this easily without affecting the meaning of the story.

We have now published your response to your story which I hope has covered the concerns you have raised about the moderation of your story.

If you do have any further concerns you can email these for my attention at moderators@careopinion.org.uk

Many thanks once again for using Care Opinion

Chris
