"The team of nurses who cared for my husband were absolutely phenomenal"

About: Community Nursing Services / Rushcliffe Community Nursing

(as a service user),

Three weeks ago, my husband died, having been fast-tracked out of The City Hospital. We were so fortunate to get him home, where he wanted to be. At this point he came under the care of the District Nurse team which, I understand, is your brief.

The team of nurses who cared for my husband were absolutely phenomenal. They were called upon three or four times during a very traumatic night for us, his closest family. I was so impressed not only with their kind, gentle and oh-so-skilled care of my husband, but also their understanding of and concern for us, his family.

Their empathetic calm and patent professionalism gave us the reassurance that we were doing our very best for my husband - so important for us at such a distressing time. They assessed and attended to all his physical and medical needs with such a quiet expertise, while preserving his dignity and ensuring his comfort at all times. They were truly magnificent.

It seems so wrong to single out one person from such a coherent, wonderful team, but I do feel the need to mention Jo, who was our fist and last contact with the team. Jo was, quite simply, fantastic. She guided us gently through what was to be the most traumatic experience of our lives. She took time to explain everything that was happening and to prepare us for what was to come.

After my husband died,  Jo was the first person on the scene and she was so gentle with him and us: she truly epitomised the concept of care, something which regrettably has been lacking too often during my husband's time in the hospital.

I can't thank the team enough for their help, kindness and support. They were all a revelation to us and, may I say, such a credit to you. Thank you - all of you.
