"My experience of the eye clinic"

About: Chesterfield Royal Hospital / Ophthalmology

(as the patient),

I have a serious eye condition in my Left eye and I am blind in my right eye. When I have a corneal breakdown in my left eye it leaves me virtually blind and in a lot of pain.

Last Friday evening I had a bad attack on my eye and had to wait for the eye clinic to open on Monday morning. I have been before and there is nobody in casualty department that can help with complex eye problems.

I do not understand why the Eye Clinic Is only open Monday to Friday. Do people not have eye problems at weekends? I would have thought a clinic on Saturday say from 9:00 till 12:00 would be a much valued service for people with urgent eye problems that can't be dealt with at the Casualty Department.

Thank you for sharing your experience. Unfortunately, we are unable to provide 7 day a week ophthalmology cover here at the trust. We do work in partnership with our surrounding NHS trusts to ensure patients have access to an on call Ophthalmology service if required. They are also on call to provide expert ophthalmology advice if requested, for any patient that attends our Emergency Department with an urgent or emergency condition out of hours. Don’t forget that 111 are also available for help and advice and are able to signpost patients to the most appropriate care setting 24 hours a day.

Many Thanks
