"Treatment is given only when you tick all the boxes"

About: Bodmin Community Hospital / Minor Injuries Unit MIU South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust / NHS 111

(as a relative),

My mother went to Bodmin Minor Injuries on Sunday evening with bladder kidney problems (bleeding profusely) and because she hadn’t booked in via 111, they wouldn’t treat her, despite advising them that they couldn’t get through.

She has since been admitted as an emergency yesterday morning and is producing black urine.

Not treating a patient and sending them away because of booking in procedures is surely negligent.

What on earth has the NHS come to if treatment is given only when you tick all the boxes. I am disgusted!

Dear Nicki71

Thank for sharing your mums experience at Bodmin Minor Injury Unit. It is extremely important to hear the stories of our service users and to share these experiences with the staff who are delivering the care. Your feedback enables us to learn from these experiences, both good and bad and look at how we can improve on the care we deliver.

As a Trust we strive to provide excellent patient care and we are disappointed this was not the case on your mums visit to Bodmin Minor Injury Unit. I have asked that the Matron of Bodmin provides a response which I will upload in due course. If after this response you remain unhappy please contact our Patient Advice & Liaison Team who will process your concern and or complaint - 01208 834620 cpn-tr.palscft@nhs.net

Many thanks

Becky

Dear Nicki71

We are sorry this was your mothers experience at Bodmin Minor Injury Unit, I would like to confirm that no patients are turned away from MIU because of not calling 111, however, they are signposted to other services when they present with a condition that is not provided by the MIU service.

If the condition was not treatable in the MIU we would have redirected your mother to call 111 from our triage due to her needing to see a doctor and this is the process for accessing the out of hours doctors service at weekends.

The condition presented with was not a ‘minor injury’ and is not within the scope of practice of the nurses within an MIU (MIUs do not have doctors working – it is a nurse led service).

If you would like me to look further into this, please could you kindly email the patient experience team with your mothers details so that I can check the notes on our system cft.patientexperience@nhs.net

Many thanks
