I waited 4 weeks for a podiatry appointment with NHS Fife. Saw the Podiatrist (no introduction or name offered nor apology for them being 20 minutes late!) who I found incredibly patronising and falsely accused me of not carrying out the exercises I had been given over the telephone for Plantar Fasciitis. I listened to what felt like a patronising lecture about exercises for about 10 minutes where I was asked to describe and demonstrate what I had been doing before I was told I need to be shown how to stretch my foot on a stair. I felt so patronised given there was no interest in how I had been trying to resolve the pain that I walked out.
What I had expected was a discussion about whether I had Plantar Fasciitis as my symptoms differ from the norm, at least an examination of my foot, a chat about a lump I have on my foot and cramping toes and possibly some advice on suitable footwear. Maybe even an observation of the biomechanics of my foot. Nope, got none of that, so will have to go down the route of paying for private treatment where at least my foot will be examined.
I experienced an absolute lack of person centred care which was totally at odds with the thrust of realistic medicine and no ‘right treatment at the right time’.
Sometimes I’m embarrassed to work for the NHS.
