"OPAU experience"

About: Daisy Hill Hospital / Older People Assessment Unit

(as a relative),

Recently my wife and I took our elderly cousin to a pre booked assessment in the OPAU in Daisy Hill Hospital , Newry.

Is spite of an overcrowded ED area we were welcomed by Chloe, the young lady who made the booking, then taken on arrival to the OPAU area and welcomed into a consultation room. My cousin was attended by two nurses, two doctors and an OT nurse, who knew my cousin, over a two hour assessment. All staff treated my cousin in a friendly and professional manner and we were allowed to be present to offset problems caused by my cousin’s deafness. Later that day he reported to a carer back in his home what a good time he had.

Hello Mourne Man,

Thanks so much for taking the time to send such positive feedback.

I am so reassured that you had a pleasant experience in our OPAU in light of the pressures within the hospital system.

OPAU is certainly an area of assessment that is more conducive to the older person for a full assessment. It is our aim to assess patients at a point prior to them needing in patient hospital care.

I hope your cousin remains well and I will be sure to share your feedback with the team.

Yvonne
