"Discrimination against people with BPD diagnosis"

About: East Glade Centre

(as a service user),

From my experience it is impossible to access DBT in Sheffield.

Rejected referrals from personality disorder service at St Georges.

Iapt don't allow people with bpd into their service (exclusionary/discriminatory criteria)

I feel as a result that people with BPD in Sheffield left with no help

One statistic is that 1 in 10 people with BPD commit suicide.

I am sorry that you have experienced difficulties accessing mental health services. A range of psychological interventions are available in Sheffield for people experiencing difficulties associated with a diagnosis of borderline personality disorder, from a variety of services including Primary Care Networks, Emotional Wellbeing Service, Recovery Teams, Specialist Psychotherapy Services and Voluntary Community and Social Enterprise partners.

The Dialectical Behavioural Therapy offer is an intensive therapy approach and there are currently a limited number of places for the city. As such, DBT tends to be offered to those people most likely to derive benefit and who are unlikely to benefit from other forms of therapy.

If this service was not offered to you the reasons for this should have been fully discussed with your referrer alongside a consideration of alternative services. If this was not the case then I would advise you to in the first instance to discuss your concerns and needs with your initial referrer or GP to ensure that these can be fully considered.

I am unsure if you are currently under the Recovery Team as indicated in your post and if you are I would also advise you to raise your concerns with your current health worker and ask to speak to the Recovery Team manager if you feel your needs are not being fully considered.

Equally, if you would like further details regarding the services that are offered by the Specialist Psychotherapy Service you could contact the Clinical Lead from the Specialist Psychotherapy Service on 0114 271 6890 who would be able to provide this.
