"Gold star treatment"

About: University Hospital Hairmyres / Intensive Care Unit University Hospital Hairmyres / Theatres, Recovery & Anaesthetics

(as a service user),

I was in emergency major life-saving surgery. I had very rare condition. Mr Denley was to be my surgeon.  Before I knew what was wrong, he ordered a CT scan. He was back in A&E cubicle before me. Explained I'd a very rare bowel condition and had I not come in, I could be dead. He'd no time to let me think, he had to get me into theatre immediately. I was prepped, I was very scared and tearful. But, Mr Denley was amazing. He was out of this world. He calmed me after explaining what was wrong and that he needed to operate now. If you know me, you'll know I'm a scaredy with hospitals. They petrify me. Yet, such a major emergency op, I can't believe how Mr. Denley calmed me to accept it and off I went to a ward, was prepped and trolleyed to theatre. He had to get a theatre opened for my op. Also my anaesthetist - can't remember his name - was wonderful. Put me at ease before he knocked me out in the ante room. I don't know to this day how.

After my operation Mr Denley saw me every day in High Dependency. My goodness, this man deserves a medal from the King. I'm not joking. He is the best surgeon Hairmyres is blessed to have. He is a miracle worker at keeping a patient like me calm. He has a wonderful manner about him. He's not stuck up like a lot of consultants. I was very blessed that Mr. Denley was working that day and I got him as my surgeon. He's the best.

I also want to say my enhanced recovery nurse Emma. Well. She is the best too. She goes above and beyond what she should. Another blessing for me.

Hairmyres gets a bad name at times. And I know it's not perfect. I've needed life saving care. Once for pneumonia where I was in ICU in Hairmyres very ill and then this year where I needed life saving mayor emergency surgery for a rare bowel condition. And that man Mr. Denley saved my life. My care and aftercare in my local hospital Hairmyres has been gold star treatment. The nurses for 4 of us in that small room in High Dependency were run off their feet yet, I couldn't have had better care.

I want to thank Mr Denley and I'll never forget his care and the way he treated me, to calm me as a person and saved my life. Thank you Mr D. You're simply the best.

Dear Hella

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience. You have certainly been through a very difficult and worrying time. Mr Denley was pleased to read your positive feedback and delighted to know that you felt he was able to support and calm you. He is indeed an exemplary surgeon and it is lovely to read how much his care has been appreciated.

I will also share your comments with the wider team. Thank you again.

I hope that you are recovering well.

Kind regards

Lise
