"Pre op assessment for hysterectomy"

About: Antrim Area Hospital / Pre-Assessment Unit Antrim Area Hospital / Ward C1 Gynaecology

(as a service user),

Pre op assessment in March

Excellent service provided by two nurses and a pharmacist

I left with a written plan of my medication I had to omit due to clot risk

I felt confident and reassured by these ladies

The day before my scheduled hysterectomy I received a phone call to say to go to the gynae ward for bloods and a covid test.  I was told to fast from 07:30 and to ring the ward at 10:30.  On phoning I was told there were no beds but to keep fasting

I tried to ring the ward many times but no answer. At 15:10 I received a phone call to say my procedure was unable to go ahead and would have to be postponed 4-5 weeks.  What a stressful day and such a disappointment after receiving such good care at pre op assessment.

I understand there was no bed available for me but the total lack of communication from 1030 til 1510 was so stressful

I have fibromyalgia and don’t deal with stress very well.

I had explained my husband is wheelchair bound and I had carers in place to look after him

Dear liontf64

My name is Helen Weir and I am the Interim Head of Service for Maternity &Gynae

I am sorry to read about your experience relating to the lack of communication while waiting for admission to Gynaecology. I have shared your experience with the staff on the ward and they would like to offer your their sincere apologies as it was not their intention to cause you distress.

We feel that moving forward, in situations like you found yourself in,we will arrange with the woman to contact her at certain times to provide an update. Hopefully this will ensure that other women are kept fully informed and cause them less stress.

Many thanks

Helen
