"A&E unsafe for suicidal people"

About: Addenbrooke's Hospital / Accident and emergency

(as a service user),

I went to Addenbrooke’s A&E on a Friday at about 19:30. I told the triage nurse I was suicidal, and they let me in. After a while I was interviewed by a nurse, who I told I was suicidal, and that I had sorted out enough prescription drugs to take a fatal overdose before going to the hospital. I’m in a high-risk group, I’ve had a nearly-fatal suicide attempt before, and my plan was realistic and partially completed. The nurse told me that they would get someone from the psychiatry department to talk to me.

At 22:20 I was called to speak to a nurse, who instructed me to go home because there were no staff from the psychiatry department working overnight. I expressed my surprise and dissatisfaction. The nurse advised me to try 111 option 2 if if was still ill. This is despite the fact that the NHS website tells you to go to A&E if you do not feel you can keep yourself safe and that a mental health emergency should be taken as seriously as a physical one. You will not be wasting anyone's time.

I was still suicidal.
