"Broken ankle care"

About: Altnagelvin Area Hospital / Physiotherapy Altnagelvin Area Hospital / Trauma & Orthopaedics Causeway Hospital / Accident & Emergency Community Occupational Therapy / Community Occupational Therapy- Coleraine North Northern Ireland Ambulance Service / Emergency ambulance response

(as the patient),

5 months ago I broke my ankle in three places and dislocated it.  The ambulance staff where amazing, caring and careful with me, even checked back on me in hospital later that day.

The doctor and nurses in emergency were informative about the break,  quick to get x-rays plasters and pain meds as needed.  Liaised with Atlnagelvin as I needed surgery to stabilise ankle.  I went to Atlnagelvin, in our own car, that evening and got booked into ward.  Consultant seen me next morning and explained what was going to happen in procedure.

Waited 2 days for surgery but was well looked after during this time.  Got home 2 days later, after physio got me comfortable moving with zimmer and crutches.  The aftercare in outpatient was quick and efficient,  I was given treatment with local physio department to get ankle flexible whilst in the boot which sped up the healing, really fantastic result.

Now 5 months later I can walk, do a little light exercise, drive my car, you name it,  I can do it.  Still swollen and painful, now and again, but this is a marathon not a sprint.  Thank you to all the staff in both hospitals and physio in Rugby avenue.  You are all amazing.  Now I have been diagnosed with Osteoporosis,  I have a new journey to concur,  the staff in Ballymena, were great and very informative with lots of helpful things I can start to do for my future wellbeing. In my opinion, even a broken NHS is amazing,  when everything comes together ❤️

I am grateful to you for taking the time to share your experiences of the Northern Ireland Ambulance Service. It is heartening to hear of the care and professionalism of the paramedics who swiftly arrived and helped bring ease, it is also very heartening to hear that the paramedics returned later to check up on you. Feedback such as this lifts the morale of the paramedics involved in what is a particularly challenging period, especially when they go the extra mile to return and check up on yourself.

I wish you the best with your recuperation

Ruairi Cummings
