Having had my bloods taken recently, because of an ongoing issue with my Thyroid and medication for blood pressure, the results showed that the Serum triglycerides was over the top limit of 2.3 mmol/L. Further my non HDL cholesterol was high.
This prompted my G.P. to call me in for a consultation. As noted in the references I will add, there was an immediate reach for the prescription pad to add Statins to my medication regime. There was no attempt to discuss other methods of reduction such as dietary changes. Which I had already undertaken due an ulcer occurrence. On mentioning this, I was given a 3 month window before the next bloods to be taken. It should be noted that some research shows that a medication which I am on (bendroflumethiazide), could contribute to raised S. triglycerides.
There are plenty of references both in books published and online providing evidence of this.
I understand the difficulties Doctors face in trying to keep up to date. Which is why we, as patients need do our part by looking into meds that are/will be proscribed.
In connection with this intended application of Statins, I suffered an enlarged Thyroid whose output caused Atrial Fibrillation. This brought me under two departments at Hereford County Hospital. Once the thyroid was stabilized, the heart was cardioverted and remains in sinus rhythm at this point in time. However, scans required by the cardiologists throw up other minor (?) concerns. One being moderate aortic stenosis. Subsequently the letter arrived, from Cardiology, suggesting the application of statins. Again - at no stage has there been a discussion of dietary change, or supplements which may aid in reduction in this matter by either. Again reach for that pill.
The edict to 'do no harm' sometimes to me seems like it is being overlooked, given the current research on this matter. Being an informed patient before taking a decision on whether to take certain drugs would be a good idea. This line of thought is supported by the books I have read on the matter.
