I was attending an antenatal appointment with a Midwife and a Student Midwife. The Midwife asked me to do a CO2 test as soon as I walked in the door without even greeting myself and my partner.
My reading read very high. I am a non smoker and live in an apartment with a working and constantly checked carbon monoxide alarm. I stated this to the midwife and said I have been feeling completely fine, our alarm works and our boiler had just been checked. The midwife then proceeded to ask me again if I smoked (they had not even bothered to look at my notes) and they kept tilting their head as if accusing me of lying. Then they tried to refer me to smoking cessation - even though I do not smoke!
The midwife and the student then sent me into a frenzy, as they both then measured my baby as measuring smaller than he should be. Both had different measurements and the midwife forgot their measurement before they walked back over to their desk - I had to confirm what they had said to me.
I was asked questions by the midwife whilst they were on the phone, therefore I didn’t know who they were speaking to. I wasn’t asked how I was feeling, which is even left blank on my notes.
I left the appointment and burst into tears immediately, as I heard nothing positive about my baby. I felt like I had been accused of damaging my unborn child, and it felt like the midwife had zero interest in me or the student midwife. The midwife was rude and appeared completely uninterested in their job.
I then had a voicemail left for me about an hour or so after my appointment saying that there was a fault in the machine as 2 other girls had the same readings. I was told not to worry, after I was allowed to go home in tears.
I was sent to a growth scan where it was confirmed my child was much bigger than measured and completely healthy.
I have had such a positive experience so far until that day. I will be requesting that I do not ever see that midwife again.
