I have COPD and spent 8 days as an in-patient being treated for pneumonia. I came home on Wednesday evening and the virtual ward phoned me on Friday morning to see how I was and to explain they would be available to advise me for a week. It was reassuring to know that I could contact someone if I had any worries. They phoned me again on Sunday and I was able to tell them my lungs were still not clear but I was feeling better.
By Tuesday I had developed a cough and a rash on my feet and ankles which I thought to be cellulitis. I rang the ward and discussed this with them, we agreed I would contact my GP for diagnosis. Again it was helpful to talk to someone about this. As I did not have any severe symptoms I don’t know what the virtual ward would have done. As it was my doctor confirmed cellulitis and gave me more antibiotics to treat this and continued infection of my lungs. I don’t feel the virtual ward could help with this.
