"Support from the virtual ward"

About: Virtual Wards / Respiratory Virtual Ward

(as the patient),

I have COPD and spent 8 days as an in-patient being treated for pneumonia. I came home on Wednesday evening and the virtual ward phoned me on Friday morning to see how I was and to explain they would be available to advise me for a week. It was reassuring to know that I could contact someone if I had any worries. They phoned me again on Sunday and I was able to tell them my lungs were still not clear but I was feeling better.

By Tuesday I had developed a cough and a rash on my feet and ankles which I thought to be cellulitis. I rang the ward and discussed this with them, we agreed I would contact my GP for diagnosis. Again it was helpful to talk to someone about this. As I did not have any severe symptoms I don’t know what the virtual ward would have done. As it was my doctor confirmed cellulitis and gave me more antibiotics to treat this and continued infection of my lungs. I don’t feel the virtual ward could help with this.

Thankyou for you feedback on the care you received on our Virtual Ward. I am pleased to hear you felt reassured knowing the team were available to support you at home.

We work really closely with all medical providers to ensure you are safely managed at home and will always act on your behalf when required.

I am pleased to hear you had a thorough medical review with your GP where antibiotics where appropriately started. We are a true multidisciplinary including pharmacists, nurses and therapists.

We are supporting our staff with being able to remotely prescribe medications to provide wrap around care, therefore being able to manage more complexities in the future.
