(as a service user),

I’ve just attended the programmed treatment unit (PTU) in RVH for an iron infusion. I would just like to say that the HCA was fantastic so friendly, however I am concerned that as a patient with a central line (Hickman) that no sterile technique such as sterile gloves was used with it and it was just treated as a cannula.  I have always been told the importance of an aseptic technique being used, when I asked about this I was informed it wasn’t policy.

I worry this increased the chance of me getting a line infection.

I am Jane Sheridan the service manager for PT, thank you for bringing this to my attention and informing me of your concerns. As you know asepsis is vital to prevent infection and ensure safety for our patients.

I will follow this up with the Sister in the unit and ensure that also staff follow the aseptic technique in particular with hickman lines.

Please be assured we do take this seriously, thank you once again for bringing this to our attention.
