My husbands new pace maker became infected after it was changed due to a new battery being needed.
He had a severe infection when seen in the pacing clinic and was sent home until the device could be removed.
The infected wound was not checked or treated for 7 days, no wound care or advice. The pace maker actually came out by about 2 inches before the device could be removed.
On going into hospital for the device to be removed after 7 days he had sepsis. This could of been avoided if arrangements to clean and dress the wound had been provided. Sepsis could of been avoided and severe kidney failure and dialysis.
Guide lines of treating an infected wound were not followed and the distress and pain of the device coming out could of been avoided
Very poor standard of care from the cardio, but cannot fault the renal department and the wards while in hospital for over 3 weeks
"Distress and pain could of been avoided"
