"Waiting time for DEXA scan"

About: Royal Alexandra Hospital / Radiology

(as a relative),

My mum has been waiting around ten months for a DEXA scan with no appointment in sight. She's having back pain and does not know if this is being caused by osteoporosis or something else. The scan should have been repeated last year but her GP never put the referral in. It should have been repeated last year at the request of a consultant she saw at the hospital but as the GP never put the referral in and only did it when my mum complained of back pain she is now having to wait.

If people are having to wait so long for scans they could end up with serious problems.

Update posted by S69 (a relative)

I was told the scanner at the RAH was in the process of being replaced and if my mum wanted to travel.to Inverclyde this could be arranged. After initially saying no as she doesn't have a car we agreed my mum would travel to another hospital as she was suffering more pain.

Someone was supposed to call my mum to offer her an appointment but that was a week ago and no phone call. I really think it is a disgrace that it was requested that my mum have her scan repeated last year, but the referral wasn't made and it was only done when my mum compained of back pain.

When my mum had her last scan it showed she had Osteopenia and now because of the increasing pain we are concerned it has progressed to osteoporosis. People are being penalised because of where they live as I know someone who lives elsewhere in Scotland and in the space of five weeks they were referred for a scan had it done and had the results.

Why can't NHSGGC send patients to other hospitals instead of making people wait for such a long time and some of them in pain?
